It now has been two years since the Knights won their second national championship and now head coach Robert Degree is ready to claim another title. Degree took a year off from coaching and he is back as top dog to lead the Knights for a third title. Knights Insider had a chance to sit down with the AFA Hall of Famer coach.
KI: What are your expectation for the upcoming season?
Degree: I looking for the offense to put points on the board and the defense to continue to stay aggressive. The offense will be stronger than ever.
KI: You said the offense will be stronger, what positions will be your strength?
Degree: Our running backs will be loaded. Joshua Bowden, Jason Colson and Arel Gordon will have something to bring to the table. Our receivers will be the best I've coached in awhile. Both Jamad Woods and Clyde Logan are playmakers and they will deliver.
KI: Are there areas that need to be addressed this year?
Degree: We have to do a better job in pass protection and better route running from our receivers. We also need to be better discipline especially when we face adversity during the season.
KI: I know a great team starts with the coaching staff, what are your thoughts about the coaching staff you put together?
Degree: I have a superb staff this season. I feel I have the best of both worlds with offensive coordinator Shawn Wood. He was my defensive coordinator on my last championship team and he had one of the best defenses in the country. He moved back to offense to give defenses fits. I brought in Eddie McCullough as my defensive coordinator. He is "old School" and has great knowledge on the defensive side of the ball. He has no problem attacking the offense. The assistant coaches are very passionate about the game and are eager to prepare the player for the upcoming season.
KI: Last question, who will win Texas and Alabama?
Degree: I feel Alabama will win because they have the same formula that I have for a championship team, a strong running game and an aggressive defense.
